Digital Cheat Sheet

About

CatPaper App, beta

Go on Patrol like a Pro — anytime, anywhere you need. An App that might come in handy.

A digital product designed to assist Security Officer for their daily Security Patrol duties. A Cheat Sheet provides not only info about different Patrol Routes, but with useful features that might helps.

Dare to Defy. Disobey.
Designed, built and maintained by Jw

TL;DR Too long, didn't read. It's an Web App created by a designer whose attempting to solve problems. Nothing more.

  • What is CatPaper?

An Web App designed for Security Personnel. A simple tool intents to assist them while they're on the go. The App provides quick and easy access for checking Patrol Routes / Info easily when they carry out duties in/outside of a commercial building.

Cat Paper literally stands for “ 貓紙 maau1 zi2 ” in Cantonese, which means cheat sheet.

Note: If you have any comments or questions regarding this application or the content, you might reach the creator at hi[at]fury.hk

  • 'Tis an Web App

CatPaper is an PWA - Progressive Web App. This is an Read Only app that offers almost Zero functionality.

Even though it meets the minimum requirements of an PWA, this is nothing but a fairly simple and basic website. It was built using HTML & vanilla CSS only, with a little bit help of php to make life easier. In case you're wondering, yes, I hard-coded the whole thing without implementing any JS framework.

I'm aware that it matters very little by creating this app, but still, I had a lot of fun while building it and I'm glad that I tried to make it happen.

Note: This project is still in development. Currently in Beta version. Read our Privacy Policy.

  • How it works?

User can “Install / Bookmark” — Add to Home Screen on iPhone iOS Safari or Android Google Chrome. An App icon will appear to your Home Screen and it can be access at anytime even if there're no internet connection (offline).

This app are intended for mobile user. But of course you can still view it on desktop/laptop. It'll work in most modern browser: Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Edge.

  • For whom to use it?

For internal/staff use only. The provided information of this app are for Security Officers who work in a specific commercial building. Basic knowledge of a Security Officer/Guard are required.

Note: Please be aware that the details and location of the building are not shown here for preventing any possible security breach.

  • The Problem

Being clumsy, fumbling around paper sheets for checking patrol related information while carrying out patrols. This is obviously not professional.

  • Project Goal and Objectives

    Goal
To design and create a tool for assisting Security Officer who carry out patrols/duties in a Grade A commercial building.

    Objectives
Relearn HTML and CSS. Build functional and accessible User Interfaces. Learn how to plan, organize and develop a digital product which is sustainable. To create something that is actually useful and improve English writing skills. Be creative and stay motivated.

  • The Challenge

There are lots of Information and Data for a grade A commercial building while most of them are not provided or being organized. First, try to think of the needs of user and picking the most relevant content for them. Secondly, building interface and components that provides minimal interaction which allows user check on anything effortlessly. The challenge is to categorize and organize those Info / Data effectively by choosing the suitable HTML elements and present them in a way that meets the semantics.

    • Usability: Allow user to navigate, check info easily on mobile singlehandedly
    • User Interface: Keep the UI as minimal as possible: light weight and accessible. Every features will work without JavaScript: Cards, Patrol Routes, etc
    • Navigation: Ensure all clickable target size for <button>, <a> and <label> are big enough for touch screen
    • Typography: All font-size are adjusted to a bit larger than usual. I'm aware that setting a normal or slightly smaller text will make the layout look nice and to have more space. In this case, I'd prefer larger text for easier reading. Easy to read has to be the highest priority rather than aesthetic
    • Alignment & Spacing: Make sure everything's aligned properly
  • What are the purposes of creating this?

    Problem solving.

I'm trying to employ best practice of UI/UX design for mobile, writing semantic HTML & CSS, learning Web Accessibility and distill them into this thing. Sometimes, doing anything is better than doing nothing. I've learnt a lot along the way.

  • Why?

Before I answer I must ask, do you have something in mind that you want to create on you own? Have you ever wanted to turn an idea into something useful? Have you even tried? Don't answer me. I asked myself everyday, I bet you might as well.

In short, it is because I wanted to make it happen. Simple as that.

  • Who are you?

    I'm Jw, a designer.

  • Tools

    MacBook Pro 15" - mid 2010
    Code editor: VS Code
Developed on macOS: Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Edge

Updates

Notes

  • Let's call it a day

  • Feels a bit better

    • Slightly updated Tabs. It will not have position: sticky if there's a <table> with sticky header. I believe it's an improvement overall which makes much more sense now. However, every time user tab on it it'll jump to the top of the page...I think I'll have to live with that
    • Added Tabs for Staircases
  • Learn of Something Everyday

    • Testing Tabs on Overview, Lifts. It's cool to have position: sticky for Tabs. But turns out if there's a <table> also has sticky header, they will overlapping each other when scroll up. It doesn't make sense to me if I change the top: 1em value. I'm not sure if there's a way to solve such a problem.
  • Some updates and thoughts

    • This app can be improve a little by adding Tabs. It can reduce a lot of page scrolling and user can have more control over what to check/read. The reason Tabs are not implemented is because it'll require JavaScript. But of course there're tricks that doesn't involve JS but I don't think if thats an good idea. We'll see what we can do about it later.
    • Also, this whole thing is a single web page. Using id to jump to different section as Page is definitely not a good idea, at all. There're 11945 lines of <html> and it's obviously too bulky
    • Updated Quick Facts, Patrol Overview
    • Security Duties. My first attempt of using dislay: grid combined with <dl> <dt> <dd>

Duties

Please be aware: Work in Progress. Learning display: grid. I don't think if using Definition List <dl>, <dt> and <dd> as a Timeline is either right or wrong but I do think there's good or bad. At least I'm trying though. I found it quite difficult to visualize or present every task in a timeline because some of the tasks are overlapping with each other. Been trying to find a way that will make sense.
