When it comes to robot movies, people know about Transformers and Michael Bay. He’s the guy who nailed the genre. This time, we’ve got massive scale Jaegers piloted by two person and fighting Kaijus in Hong Kong. We’re talking about some 250 feet tall giant robots fighting monsters, what else do you need?

Pacific Rim is a live-action robot and monster film created by Guillermo del Toro. He is one of the best, if not the best, filmmakers out there who makes movies that we all love. I enjoyed every minute of the film. This film has it all if you like Mecha, Kaijus, and Anime.

This movie has the most epic scenes in mecha film history. In spite of all Jaegers’ fighting Kaijus sequences being done in CGI, it still looks gorgeous. I can tell you it’s so much better than any other robot film. You can feel the weight and the massive size of Jaegers and Kaijus. Most importantly, they’re fighting in my city. This is a CGI heavy film but with a much more grounded, well-executed, and intriguing story to tell.

The cast is very diverse. We can finally see people around the world working together instead of relying on one certain country to save the entire human race. That’s a very good start. Our protagonist is Charlie Hunnam, an English actor. A Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi 菊地(Kikuchi) 凛子(Rinko) played as Mako. I remember her from the movie Babel (2006) starring Brad Pitt. People from different countries and backgrounds come together and pilot Jaegers to fight the final battle. How cool is that? Also, it’s always fun to see Ron Perlman.

What I like most is the set design. I’m very glad that they didn’t create everything in CG. The Conn Pod (where pilots drive their Jaegers) is the best looking set I’ve ever seen. It looks just like you’re inside the robots and the mechanics feel so authentic. Gipsy Danger is my favourite one amongst all Jaegers. I also want to mention The Bone Slum set, which is basically based on the street in Hong Kong. And they nailed it. The neon signs look exactly like the street signs in the city. Everything in the movie is very well designed.

Last but not least, there’s no sequel to Pacific Rim. They’re just some spin off that wouldn’t come close to this masterpiece. I’ll watch every movie that Guillermo created. I haven’t got the chance to see The Shape of Water (2017) just yet. So, until next time.

My Afterthought

A Mecha film made with great affection. I can see a lot of effort went into creating the movie. If you like robots and monsters, you won’t be disappointed.
